There aren’t many things more relaxing and enjoyable then sitting in the privacy of your own backyard listening to your favorite music along with the water splashing against the rocks and watching the koi on a beautiful summer night. We discovered this after a major backyard project that included two large ponds totaling 11,000 gallons. Although many people wouldn’t want such large ponds we have a very big yard and have had water restrictions for a number of years recently so we were struggling to keep grass growing. My husband spent time researching options and decided that self-built ponds would be the best solution all around. The cost savings by building them ourselves was probably at least 60%.
We have falls, a fountain, koi in the larger pond and bass in the other. We also put in many perennial plants as well as some annuals including hyacinths and water lettuce. The annual plants are fairly inexpensive and they reproduce rapidly. The summer we built them they really were a lot of work but now we can enjoy them with a minimum of upkeep. Of course most people wouldn’t want something quite as large but now that they are done they were worth the effort. If you are a “do it your selfer” give it some thought.
