Determining Water Capacity
For rectilinear ponds:
If the pond is roughly square or rectangular, measure its average depth, with, and length. Then multiply the three figures to determine cubic feet. Multiply cubic feet by 7.5 to get capacity in gallons.
For circular ponds:
Multiply the diameter by the diameter (diameter squared) times the depth times 5.9 to get the capacity in gallons.
For oval ponds:
Multiply the depth by the width by the length by 6.7 to get the capacity in gallons.
For free-form ponds:
It’s tough to calculate the volume of an irregularly shaped pond accurately. For the closest estimate, determine the average depth, width, and length, and then use the equation for oval ponds above to get an approximate capacity in gallons.
